Besides the opening that was used for entrance and exit to the shelter, human had created voids on the shell in order to get light and air inside. Person meets his shelter need finding spaces to hide in by the instincts such as feeling safe, being protected and so on. As a result, quality of current border concept is evaluated. In this context, the study summarized historical transformation of the facade concept on the one hand, and on the other, analyzed the surface concept by architects and architecture of 19th and 20th centuries. This study reconsidered the concept of surface as a conceptual argument to understand/comprehend building border qualities. So, it can be said that new conceptual arguments are necessary to argue about border issue in contemporary architecture. Today, in practice, it is possible to mention many buildings exceeding their theoretical limits of facade concept. ![]() This situation brings up a current problem that should be an interest of contemporary philosophical theories of architecture. ![]() ![]() Although building production methods are completely different from pre-modern times, borders are still revealed in the context of meaning and limits of facade concept. ![]() The concept of facade in architectural history has been the primary theoretical tool to express the external perception of the building. This study queries spatial borders in the context of facades and surface concepts in contemporary architecture.
